Based on the conflict between the Yue and Wu states in the Spring and Autumn period, it tells the story of the King Goujian of Yue's perseverance in overcoming the odds to revive his fallen state of Yue. The famed beauty Xi Shi was discovered by Yue statesman Fan Li, and sent into Fuchai’s palace as a spy along with Zheng Dan. According to legend, the two women were instrumental in the downfall of the arrogant Fuchai and the restoration of Goujian to the throne.
